By the time a business owner calls us saying things are "suddenly" bad, it's rarely sudden. Almost always, someone inside the business had a feeling something was off months earlier and pushed the thought aside because the next order, the next season, or the next big client was going to fix it. The businesses that come through financial stress in the best shape are usually the ones that acted on that early feeling instead of waiting for it to become undeniable.

The signs are usually visible early

Financial distress rarely shows up overnight. Vendor payments start slipping by a few days, then a few weeks. Short-term borrowing becomes routine instead of occasional. Margins quietly erode as costs creep up. One or two customers start accounting for most of the revenue. Compliance filings get pushed back "for now." Each sign on its own looks manageable — together, they usually mean the business is heading toward real stress.

Why owners miss them

Most founders are buried in daily operations and don't have a simple dashboard telling them where things stand. There's also a natural optimism bias — the next big order or the next good month always feels close enough to fix things. By the time the pressure becomes obvious to everyone, the options available are usually fewer and more expensive.

What to do once you notice them

Start by getting an honest, current picture of cash position, receivables, payables and profitability by line of business. Prioritise cash over accounting profit. Talk to key lenders and vendors early rather than after a default — most are far more cooperative when approached proactively. And bring in an outside perspective before decisions are made under pressure, since it's hard to see your own business clearly from inside a crisis.
